MIXED MEDIA ARTIST
I get bored quickly and enjoy mixed-media techniques. I will try any combination of materials and techniques together to see the outcome. It is rare I only just paint. You can usually see various techniques in each piece, and I want you to see the process in each piece. I see potential in new as well as found or discarded material, and I collect a varied assortment of tapes, textiles, embroideries, and trims. In each painting, I combine various tapes, line-drawing media, acrylic, and oil painting techniques, as well as textiles and foundobjects to construct portrait that conveys the emotion and character of my subject.
Color and technique are important as I like to combine multiple techniques together methodically by combining wet and dry mixed-media techniques to create an image that is part drawing, painting, and surface textile application.
Over the last few years as I produce more work, I realized I am creating a study anatomy one part at a time – faces, hands, necks, elbows, and armpits. On some level, I know these can all be associated with various fetishes, which has been an underlying theme in all my work.
Before Covid-19, I usually began a piece by photographing a model, where I used various height platforms, stairs, or chairs to achieve a sense of distortion or forced perspective. I have never been interested in replicating photo-realistic art, so I knew I always wanted to distort what we are familiar with. I had it pointed out to me that these images often look like selfies so during lockdown, so I have been using reference images from Instagram. I have connected with models and photographers on Instagram who have a similar distorted viewpoint and have permission to use their images.
We do not all show our true emotions in public or a professional workplace, but in environments where we feel comfortable and safe. I create a setting where the models feel less guarded and relaxed so I can capturetheir raw emotions and feelings. Ultimately, my goal is to show the spirit of the model’s true self and share thatemotion through each painting.

Gary's art is amazing. We have 2 portraits in our Palm Springs home and he really captured the personality of the subject and made beautiful art that goes with the decor of our home nicely.
